Both Dr. Serena Moseman-Valtierra and Elizabeth Brannon traveled to San Francisco to attend the AGU Meeting. Dr. Moseman-Valtierra gave a talk titled "Testing two potential fates for coastal marshes: Greenhouse gas emissions from native, Phragmites australis-invaded, and permanently inundated zones" and Elizabeth presented a poster titled "Using Mid-IR Cavity Ring-Down Spectrometry to Simultaneously Measure N2O, CO2, and CH4 Fluxes: Responses to Ammonium Nitrate Additions in Salt Marshes". You can view electronic copies of their abstracts in the online AGU program. During the conference Elizabeth had a chance to visit the birth place of the lab's CRDS Analyzer, Picarro headquarters. What a great way to end the year!

Three of the MV Lab undergraduates that participated in the Coastal and Environmental Fellows program this past summer at URI presented their research this Friday.
Ian-Robert Armistead: "Will high marsh dieback affect blue carbon budgets?" Isabella China: "Greenhouse gas fluxes from coastal marshes: declining in CO2 uptake with rising sea level?" Soliel Doman: "Pore water and soil analysis in Phragmites salt marshes" Congrats everyone! MV Lab member, Ryan Quinn just received $1000 from the URI Undergraduate Research Initiative: Awards for Scholarly, Creative and Artistic Projects for her research proposal titled: Testing the effect of crab burrows and benthic algal presence on nutrient fluxes in a southern RI salt marsh. Ryan will complete this research during the Spring 2015 semester under the mentorship of Dr. Serena Moseman-Valtierra.
Melanie gave her first talk at a national conference titled "Increased temperature and excess nutrients may increase greenhouse gas fluxes from coastal systems" at the 2014 Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference in Los Angeles, California! She also went along and won best graduate oral presentation in environmental science! Great job, Melanie!
Our two undergraduate NSF Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows presented their findings at the 2014 SURF conference held at the University of Rhode Island. Ryan Quin worked with our graduate student, Elizabeth Brannon, on researching greenhouse gas fluxes at the Field's Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. Alexandra Moen examined nitrous oxide production from subtidal bivalves in the Narragansett Bay. Even though their internships are over, these lucky gals will continue to work in our lab for the fall semester. Excellent job, MV team! Meet the rest of the SURF 2014 class here! Along with helping coordinate a session, our Ph.D. candidate, Rose Martin, presented a poster at the Joint Aquatic Science Meeting in Portland, Oregon! Her presentation was titled "Effects of Phragmites australis invasion and salinity on greenhouse gas fluxes in two New England salt marshes." The Wetland Foundation funded her travel to JASM and you can read more about her project here. Our masters student, Liz Brannon, received the Niering Travel Award to present at the New England Estuarine Research Society spring meeting in Salem, MA. Her poster titled "The grand experiment: Do smaller nitrogen loads into Narragansett Bay mean larger greenhouse gas emissions at Field's Point?" was a huge hit at the poster session. Keep it up, lady! Demerise Johnston, a senior at URI is recipient of the 2014 Richard D. Wood Academic Achievement Award in Biological Sciences for her molecular work in the MV lab under the guidance of Dr. MV and Rose Martin. Thats a great way to end your URI career, Demerise! |
