Maddie is a Summer 2023 Research Intern with CFRF to help characterize spider crab populations in Rhode Island, assist with Jonah Crab data, and develop new projects. Maddie hopes to help characterize the blue crab population in Narragansett Bay to help researchers, fishermen, and managers come together to establish holistic models of fisheries management to keep ecosystems healthy. Working with CFRF is the start to this career long journey she hopes to embark on. This internship is supported by the Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment.
Maddie was awarded the CELS Robert P. & Dolores C. McKenna Graduate Scholarship to help support her continued blue crab pot survey field work to assess blue crab population characterization in a tidal river in Bristol, RI!

They are using the grant to study methane gas emissions from rocks found on Earth and Mars

Congrats ladies!! MV Lab member Kate Szura has been busy in her last year at URI! While finishing up field work, working hard in her final courses, and writing her thesis, Kate also presented her research "Summer Greenhouse Gas Fluxes Along a 100-fold Nitrogen Gradient in Narragansett Bay" at the NEERS Fall 2016 meeting where she was awarded with Best Graduate Poster! More recently, Kate was selected from a very competitive group of national applicants to participate in the John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship Program where she accepted a placement within NOAA's Office of the Chief Information Officer. She has been living and working in DC since January 2018 where she is working on a project that makes NOAA's atmospheric and oceanic data more easily accessible. Now enrolling! BIO/NRS 485 and 585
Salt Marsh Ecology Classes will meet Monday and Wed from 3-5pm Join Dr. Moseman-Valtierra for a hands-on, field-based course in which we will address questions of global change (invasions, eutrophication, climate change) using our local salt marshes.
